Many are Called Few Are Chosen

In the recent days and weeks, I have been somewhat neglectful.  I think that it is so easy to get caught up with that is going on around you.  Whether it is school, work, job, kids, health, etc. that one can lose focus quite easy.  I can say that this has been me.  But like always, God always knows how, when, and where to get my attention.  The way in which God’s always gets my attention is through my health, and it is done in such a way that He is letting me know that He will not be ignored.

About a week ago through a freak accident that consisted of a metal mop pole into the side of my knee resulting, was the first of God trying to get my attention.  I had never broken a bone a day in my life and the only other time I had stitches were through medical procedures (i.e wisdom teeth) but here the bone of my knee stood exposed and I could not shake the uncanny feeling that God was trying to tell me something.  To confirm my feeling, later that week I came down with some unknown medical issue that mocked cholera (me losing 7 pounds in two days).

As I went to the doctor’s she was literally telling me that at 29 a fairly healthy women, was at risk for acute heart failure due to having some severe deficits in vitamins and fluids, with little to no explanation as to why this happened.  I left the doctor’s office that day with a diagnosis of hypokalemia, dehydration, nausea, and a new outlook on what in the world was going on with me.
What was God trying to tell me in such a big way that I was knocking on death’s door, literally?  I think the first is a very generic lesson that can apply to us all.  And that is that our bodies our very frail.  I think often times we forget how many things we do day in and day out that can kill us or cause us harm.  When we think of God’s grace, love, and everything in between, He really does protect us as we walk blindly through life not really thinking of it one way or the next, getting so consumed in things and never really giving all of our praise to God or even thanking him for the unforeseen and seen dangers that we go through in our lives.  And worse that something as small as a metal mop handle can cut us to the white meat bone and something as minor as a deficiency and kill us.

I think sometimes we just have to stop and smell the roses.  We have to look around and see the beauty around us.  I can never understand how people can look at this world, the beauty, the wonder, the sky, stars, moon, everything, and not understand or acknowledge that there is a larger presence outside of ourselves.  I find it very strange that people can feel as if everything in this world and universe just “so happens” to fall together on its own without a bigger force controlling it.  I think sometimes we forget that, and maybe God just needs to give us a little reminder sometimes that there is nothing that can even exist without God knowing about it.

Going off the strength of that, I think the bigger picture for me was a wakeup call.  I was getting so pre-occupied with things that I “have” to do to, and not getting into the things that I “need” to do, that I was missing something.  The things that I “have” to do are things that I must do for this world.  This includes going to work, paying bills, etc.  Things that I “need” to do are those in which God called me to do.  The word teaches us that many are called but few are chosen.  What the means to me is that God is crying out to us every day, calling us, drawing us near.  He wants us, all of us, and often times no matter how loud He is calling our name.......He just simply goes unheard, as we miss a calling completely.

God is everything, He created everything.   There really is nothing beyond that when you think about it.  Whatever our wants, desires, and needs outside or God, are just that….”desires” it is not our calling.  As I was going day in and day out, going through my life, movement, and everything else, I got side tracked.  God needed to have me incapacitated, with no outside distractions, before He could tell me what He wanted to say.  He needed to knock all the skin off my knee, to the “bone” in order for me to stop to hear His voice.  I needed to have 2 IV’s, 2 EKGS, 2 blood works, and 2 urine samples (all in which has results telling me that I was down for the count) in order to be reminded who is in charge.

I needed to be reminded who controlled my life, my calling, weather I breathed air on this Earth or not.  God needed me to know that it’s all for Him.  Everything, the reason I live, breath, exists, my talents…everything is all for Him and His purpose.  It is so easy to be and get complacent and just watch the days, nights, weeks, months, years, go by and life has past you by.  Before you know it God had been calling you the whole time, but yet you did not hear so you were not chosen.

Is it fearful to blindly follow God without knowing where He is leading you?…yes!!!  God tells some people their calling out right, for me, He doesn’t.  He only tells me what I need to do for the time being until I reach the next stage of my life.  Then, when I start to stray from what He is telling me to do, He knows quickly how to whip me back into shape, even at the expense of my health.  And, the thing is… I do not think I mind.  My body is God’s.  Everything within me and everything that I have is His.  There is nothing great that I can do on my own accord and without His blessing.

Reflect on yourself, reflect what is going on in your life, and reflect on what God is trying to tell you.  If you cannot hear what He is trying to tell you, then get into a quiet place until He you do, pray until He answers, fast until you hear Him, do whatever it is you need to do until God speak to you. Even if you do not hear Him speak, look around you, look at what is going on around you, and look at what He is doing.  God is always speaking to us; He is always calling us, choosing us.  So why don’t you go freely, do not be like me and wait until half of your bodily fluids are falling out before you pay attention.  Be called and be chosen.

Crochet is cool! Granny square success!

A monumental moment has happened in my life - after 2 years of trying, I finally learned how to crochet a frickin' granny square!!! I'm high fivin' myself all over the place right now! Remember THIS attempt? Now I laugh in it's face! Take that crochet blobs!

Previous to this successful attempt, i've managed to create hot messes of all shapes and sizes, none of which even closely resembled a square. Now i'm on my way to a full on blanket! Granny chic at it's finest if you will. My word, once you start, crochet is actually so satisfying and quite a good stress reliever. (Once you can actually do it, not being able to crochet a square gave me the rage!)

I have a feeling people might be getting blankets for Christmas...

Also worth mentioning that I got my wool super cheap from Wilkinsons for £1.35 each. It'll take me 6 balls in total to finish my blanket so £8.10 for a huge handmade blanket is pretty great I think!

Now I didn't just magically wake up and be able to do this, I had a little help via Instagram from Helen who posted a photo of her awesome blanket and pointed me in the direction of some great YouTube tutorials from Girlybunches. What can I say, her tutorials made everything 'click' and now i'm crocheting like there is no tomorrow! Here's her fantastic granny square tutorial that I followed. I already knew how to do the basics (I just couldn't put it all together!) but if you have never picked up a crochet hook before, she has lots of other videos which will talk you through the whole process.

I decided to make one huge square rather than lots of little ones that I had to sew together so you can use this tutorial to make the same sort of blanket as me.

If you give it a go, i'd love to see your crochet! Oh Err!! You can tweet or Instagram me @thegluegungirl

OH..... Can I also make a small reference to the fact that i'm Laura Ashley's blog crush of the month!! Yeah yeah yeah!!! This made me so happy! A HUGE thanks for picking me!

DIY: ANIMAL PRINT HEADPHONE WINDER

I was super happy when these fancy-smanchy iPhone headphones dropped through my letter box thanks to Three Mobile as my last pair had finally fallen to bits in the depths of my handbag. You know the drill, you get them out of your bag, tangled up in some super sailor knot, you walk down the street trying to undo said knots before throwing them back in you bag only to repeat the process the next day.

I was having a look for a headphone winder on eBay when I remembered I said I needed to use up some of the crafty bits and bobs I have floating around - out came the Fimo and a spur of the moment decision to make one myself! As per usual, i've winged it but managed to take some snaps of the process! I thought i'd recreate the animal print on the headphones so if you fancy giving it a go, here's how!

You'll need:

3 colours of Fimo
Heart cookie cutter
Rolling pin
Wooden skewer
A sharp knife

Pick the main colour you'd like for your winder and soften a large piece with your hands until it's pliable.

Roll out to 1/2 an inch thickness and large enough for your heart cookie cutter to fit on top of.

With the second colour of your choice, break off small pieces and squish into random shapes. Place on top of your rolled out base. As it's going to be animal print, the more random the shapes the better.

Taking your third colour choice, roll out into a very thin sausage.  Place small pieces around the edge of your random shapes in C's and add some small dots.

Roll your rolling pin across to flatten the the shapes into your base colour. Ta-Da! Animal print!

Place your cookie cutter on top and cut out a heart.

Taking the flat end of your wooden skewer, make 2 holes about an inch apart, 2 inches from the bottom point of your heart shape. Lay the skewer on its side and make an indent on a slight angle off of your heart shape. You can see this imprint in the photo below.

Using a sharp knife, cut this line away to create a channel up to the 2 holes. This is where your headphone wire with slot in so make sure the channel is thick enough to allow this.  The thickness of the skewer is perfect.

Place on a baking sheet and bake in a pre heated oven @ 190ÂșC for 30 minutes. Once it's baked, remove from the oven and allow to cool, this will make it harden up.

Wrap your headphones around it rejoice in tanglefreeness!

Sweet Tooth Keyring Tutorial & Template

Some of you may have seen on Instagram that I went through a lot of my craft stuff and i'm determined to use up some of the bits and pieces I already have before I go and splurge in Hobbycraft again. Whether this will actually happen, lets reserve judgement, but in the meantime, I thought i'd use some left over felt to make a little sweet tooth keyring. It's super easy and felt is very forgiving stuff so if you fancy making one yourself, here's how!

You'll need:

White & black felt (you only need the black felt if you aren't going to use beads for the eyes!)
A keyring chain
Short piece of thin ribbon
A pink pen
Stuffing
White & black sewing cotton
Pins
Scissors

First download the sweet tooth template from HERE and print out. Please forgive my drawing skills!
Cut out the template and then cut out 2 tooth pieces in the white felt.

Take one of your tooth pieces and using the black thread, sew a running stitch very close together to make a smile!

Sew on 2 small black beads to give your sweet tooth some eyes! I like to sew them either side of the end of the smile rather than above. I just think it looks cuter!

Put you smiley tooth on top of your other tooth piece. Taking you white thread doubled in half (this makes it thicker than a single strand) start stitching around the edge using a fell stitch until you reach the middle. You can also use a blanket stitch.

Thread your piece of ribbon through your keyring and put the ends between your two pieces of felt. Keep stitching as before to secure into place. I go over the ribbon area with a running stitch and then carry on with the same fell stitch as before.

When you are left with about half an inch left to sew, stuff your tooth with a little bit of stuffing to pad him out. You really don't need much so don't be tempted to over fill or you'll end up with a funny shaped tooth! Once filled, keep stitching until you've sewed all the way around.

You can use a pink pen to add some cute blushes and you're done!
