DIY Party Streamer Tutorial

I've gone a bit decoration mad in preparation for this weekends Queens Jubilee so I thought I'd share a super quick and cheap tutorial for DIY party streamers. You can hang them as garlands, as door curtains, in windows, anywhere you want!

You'll Need:

A packet of crepe paper
Pair of scissors

1) Start by cutting a 2-3 inch piece off the width of your crepe paper.

2) Start on one side and cut a fringe detail all the way along. Don't cut right into the centre as you want to leave a small gap down the middle.

2) Repeat the same on the opposite side.

3) While everything is still folded, give a good scrunch to either side of the fringe. Crepe paper is quite durable so don't be afraid to really give it a good ruffle.

4) Shake out the streamer and there you have it!

5) Repeat with all different colours!

6) Double them up, leave them long, drape and hang!

Hope you enjoy! Crepe paper is my new favorite thing so expect to see it featured in another tutorial soon!

Primrose Bakery Decorating Master class & Book Review

Yesterday me and David went to the Primrose Bakery for our cupcake decorating class I mentioned in a previous post HERE.

Honestly, I had such a good time! Our class was hosted by Lisa & Rachel who made the whole experience so lovely and enjoyable. You really leave feeling like you want to come back to the bakery, even to just pop in and say hello to them!

There was roughly 8 people in the class which is held in the super cute bakery on Travistock Street. Nothing can prepare you for the amazing smell of this place! When you arrive, Rachel greets everyone and makes sure you have a drink, welcoming you to have a nose around and generally just passing on a infectious, cheery feeling! Lisa, who does the class demonstrations is always encouraging you to ask any baking questions you might have and could not have been more helpful.

After a brief chat about the background of Primrose Bakery, our first task was to practice the signature  Primrose icing swirl which Lisa demonstrated after also showing us how to make the icing from the cook book. It was nice to know that every single recipe in the book is actually what they use in the shop.

It turns out, I was quite rubbish at the swirl. David on the other hand, was a pro. Bitter? Me? Of course not! Haha! David also couldn't resist eating the icing which was all in pastel colours and, not only looks pretty, but also serves a purpose as they like to use as little coloring as possible in their cupcakes to make sure you're not eating lots of rubbish artificial colours and preservatives.

Lisa also taught us, along with other things, how to make our own parchment piping bags! I'm so happy I won't have to keep buying the plastic ones for my cookie decorating now I can make my own!

At the end of the class, you got to take home a little bag of goodies including the cakes you'd decorated, a loyalty card stamped up so you can have a free cupcake, a signed postcard from Martha Swift & Lisa Thomas as well as a recipe card.

I cannot recommend this class AND the bakery highly enough. Just the feeling of the whole place makes you feel comfortable, relaxed and happy. Add to the mix that the cakes taste fricking AMAZING you have a winning combination!

A HUGE thank you to Rachel & Lisa for such an enjoyable and fun couple of hours!

If anyone is interested in taking a class (I REALLY think you should!) you can find more information HERE.

Me and David already own the Primrose Bakery book so it seemed fitting to include a little review along with this post!

The Primrose Bakery Book is a 240 page, hardback containing over 80 of the most amazing recipes. I'll go as far as to say this is my absolute favorite baking book and if you don't already own it, you need it in your life. It's dubbed as the 'baking bible' and quite frankly, I have to agree. Baking is most definitely my kinda religion!

Aside from the fact it's full of beautiful photography, the recipes are delicious and range from cupcakes, layer cakes and cookies to pastries and more.

Each recipe is easy to follow and always, the hardest part is picking what to make first!

As each cake has a corresponding icing, there is always a tutorial for both. We got to taste some of the chocolate icing Primrose use at the bakery and it's like nothing i've tried before. It's almost like a light mousse and made with dark chocolate rather than the usual coco powder.

You can see below, the signature swirl! You'd think it would be very easy to do but it actually isn't! Each cake chef learns the same way and then develops it into their own style. I know i'm going to be spending a lot of time practicing until I can show David up!

I've made pastries before but I have to admit, I have been a huge fan of the wonder of ready rolled pastry. The breakfast section, which also features granola, cinnamon buns and corn muffins means i'm definitely going to stop being lazy and have a go at making it myself, from scratch.

The recipes range from the tradition shortbread, victoria sponge to the more unique friands, flourless chocolate cake and mars bar cake! One things for certain, you'll want to bake and eat EVERYTHING.

The book is littered with tips and tricks on icing and decoration as well as step-by-step 'how to' tutorials. It really does allow you to master a lot of skills to ensure perfect baking, even for an amateur like me!

Yum.

The wedding cake section is perfect for the bride who loves a bit of shabby chic charm rather than the usual heavy iced cake. A cupcake tower or a huge layer cake is a delicious alternative and this section of the book goes into details of icing, decoration and display.

To conclude, The Primrose Bakery Book actually makes me excited about baking. It's hard to walk past it on the shelf and not want to pick it up and start making something. Although I star rate everything, this book get's an easy 11/10 from me! Yep, 11 out of 10!

Lastly, after the decorating class, we went for a walk around St. James Park, stopped for something to eat at Byron Burger (FYI the blue cheese burger is sooo good!) and generally enjoyed London on a sunny day! Best. Sunday. Ever.

Eurovision Fun Time

With @zachlondon and @davidwatsonuk

Epic fail with the Dink for the UK... So glad Sweden won though! The songs SO good! We've been singing it for weeks! Euuuuuuuuphoria!

Off to The Primrose Bakery shortly for the cupcake decorating class! Hope you are all enjoying the sunshine!

Today was....

SO hot I wore my hair up. I hate wearing my hair up. I still melted, mainly due to the fact someone pushed the passenger alarm on the tube meaning I had to stand up, crammed into a hot tube train like a sardine for an extra 20 minutes. Thank God for finding an envelope in my bag, it made a not so bad fan to push around some of the hot air.

And because it was hot, I purchased a couple of essential supplies. Who says i'm not a classy girl.

I know, i'm one of those people who moans about the heat... sorry, but i'm just not cut out for the sun. My perfect summer holiday would most definitely be somewhere cold and snowy!

That said, the sun does mean it's time to give the legs a bit of air time! Here's a beauty DIY with a difference, i'm determined to master Arabic wax because going somewhere to get my legs waxed would be far too easy! This looks like fun to make! Anyone tried it before?

Mmmm.... cupcakes!

As if I wasn't excited enough about this weekend being filled with sunshine, (it's the UK, this is subject to change) some sort of takeaway (Caribbean chicken curry with rice and peas is my choice!) and Eurovision (Don't judge me! I know I know Engelbert Humperdinck is totally cringe! FYI my moneys on Sweden!) I had totally forgot that this Sunday, me and David are going to a decorating master class at the Primrose Bakery!

It seems there are still some places left on the classes so I thought i'd give you a little bit more info in case any of you were in London and fancied it!

I am honestly so excited, this isn't something I would normally do but as i'm living back in London, I can take advantage of things like this now! Of course I'll take my camera with me and will blog about too!

Let the sunshine, let the sun shine baby!

After weeks and weeks of grey, drizzly, rainy skies.... THE SUN CAME OUT! I'm back home in Milton Keynes for the night as it's my dads birthday today, so me and mum went out for a picnic with Sweep. I love some of the old houses in this area so thought i'd share a couple of pictures I look on my phone as we went for a walk. I have house envy.

Milton Keynes isn't all ugly modern buildings and concrete cows!

Fingers crossed the nice weather lasts for the week, London in the sun is one of my favorite places!

I think I need you...

I'm usually not a huge fan of the paper lampshades that adorn most student bedrooms, but I think I may NEED this vintage floral fabric lampshade for mine... what do you think? Acceptable granny chic?

Book Review: Sweet Treats to Make, Decorate and Give

I received a post request yesterday from the lovely Alex to review some of the baking books i've started collecting up so Sweet Treats by Laura Tabor is the first i've chosen.

So who is Laura Tabor?
Since an early age, Laura Tabor has loved making jewellery and cooking. After studying jewellery design at Central Saint Martins College, London, the baking was put to one side as she started her own successful jewellery label, selling beautiful handmade pieces to stores and boutiques across the globe. After finishing her latest collection of jewellery, entitled Sweet, Laura decided it was time to combine her two loves - and so began her edible jewellery journey.

This unique collection of sweet treats is packed with 35 decorating ideas for cakes, cookies and candies. In this book, jewellery designer Laura Tabor has combined her passions for jewellery and baking, producing a range of beautifully decorated edible gifts.

The first chapter, 'Beautiful Treats for Girls', has chocolate cameos that look just like the real thing, marshmallow pearls and candy bangles. 'Seasonal Gifts' is packed with ideas for Christmas cookies, Faberge-inspired Easter eggs and a fondant Valentine's rose locket. Kids will love to make the rice paper flower pendants, jelly gems and liquorice friendship bracelets in 'Fun for Children'.

The final chapter, 'Gentlemen Adorned', has recipes for candy cufflinks, vintage chocolate buttons and a candy monocle and moustache. Clear step-by-step instructions make this book perfect for novice bakers, while more experienced cooks will enjoy the challenge of creating something uniquely different.

I loved this book from chapter 1. All the basic equipment, recipes and techniques are covered in this chapter and they are wonderfully laid out and explained. It gives great advice and instructions form filling chocolate moulds to the dreaded boiling sugar!

The recipe measurements in 'Sweet Treats' are in US cup format. Personally I don't mind this as I always think it's a lot easier that having to weight everything but it does mean you'll either need to purchase some cheapy measuring cups or convert everything to grams.

This book has a handy section covering gift wrapping ideas, i'm always swayed by pretty packaging and this is perfect for some inspiration on how to present anything to make for a beautiful gift to give.

The 'Sweet Treats' might look difficult and ornate at first, but the step-by-step instructions are a dream to follow making everything in the book achievable to make, even for a beginner.

There's some great ideas for DIY wedding favors like these pearl shell lollipops.

I recently purchased a cameo mold from eBay for a couple of pounds so I can't wait to try out some chocolate cameos for myself! I'm also going to use the sugar paste recipe in this book to make some to top cookies.

I also love that this book has some more masculine style treats in it too.

The weakest part of this book is the 'Fun for Children' chapter, mainly because it just involves stringing together ready made sweets into necklaces. None the less, you can't fault that children wouldn't love to make a necklace with jelly cherries and strawberry laces!

Overall, I really love this book and its another I am happy to have in my collection. I will be trying out some of the ideas from the book and also use it to refer to for inspiration.
